Youths of Nakaugasele Village in Nakasaleka District, Kadavu have ventured into a new income generating project.

The project was introduced by Methodist Church of Fiji president Reverend Ili Vunisuwai.

Reverend Vunisuwai said it was time for the villagers to work together to eradicate poverty in their villages.

Reverend Vunisuwai said addressing poverty was one of his main focuses when he took up his new role.

He added that villagers should see farming as a paid job.

“We should try and come up with a goal and that will free your family, village and church from poverty,” Reverend Vunisuwai said.

“You should have a plan for your village. A lot of our members are facing poverty and villages should not be faced with it because they have the land that they can use.”

Youth leader Watisoni Baro said they were blessed to be the first village in Kadavu to pilot the project.

“We have started this year and we are lucky that the president of the Methodist church of Fiji, Reverend Ili Vunisuwai has blessed this journey,” Mr Baro said.

“The project is for three years. Each youth will plant 500 yaqona plants which means in three years 100 yaqona plants can get $50,000.

“The special project will fulfill some of the things these youths want like building themselves a house or to buy a fiber boat.

“We are blessed to be part of this programme. This is a good project and I hope other villages will be part of it. This project is to tackle poverty in villages.”
