Chief To Open Tavuki Rugby Competition

The Tavuki Rugby Zone will be officially launched at the Namalata Central School in Kadavu today.

It will be launched by the Tui Tavuki, Ratu Penioni Nanovo. The Tavuki Zone includes eight teams from three tikinas, Ravitaki, Sanima and Tavuki.

Committee member, Jekeli Boginivalu said they’re trying to revive fifteens rugby after 24 years, with the theme “Kadavu Rugby rise again”.

Tavuki was the first of four zones to start its weekly club competition earlier this month.

“The interest has grown. We started with a 10s competition then onto the 15s.

We are trying to revive 15s rugby in the island which has not been done for the past 20 years or so,” Boginivalu said.

Teams in the Tavuki Zone are Namalata, Service, Namara, Tavuki, Ravitaki, Drue, Namalata Two and Duavata.

The Service team is made up of civil servants based at the Vunisea Government Station while the three villages of Natumua, Solodamu and Waisomo have combined to form the Duavata club.

Other zones that are expected to start are Nabukelevu, Nakasaleka and Naceva where they will meet for a Southern Rally to select a Kadavu team.

Top rugby players, referees and coaches who hail from the district of Tavuki includes Leone Nakarawa, James Bolabiu, Alivereti Cawanibuka (former Fijian 7s coach) and Naca Cawanibuka ( former Fijian 7s rep, strength and conditioning coach of the Fijian 7s team that won gold medals at the Rio and Tokyo Olympics and currently with the Fijian Drua at the Super Rugby Pacific.

Namalata 10-0 Service

Namara 17-0 Tavuki

Ravitaki 5-0 Drue

Namalata Two 10-3 Duavata

ROUND 5 FIXTURES

10.30am: Namalata v Namara

12.30pm: Duavata v Tavuki

2.30pm: Service v Ravitaki

4.30pm: Namalata v Drue
