Five Police officers have been suspended for drug-related activities. In one case, a Woman Police Constable, who has been in the force for two years, has been suspended for testing positive for methamphetamine, cocaine, and marijuana.

The test results have been sent overseas for further analysis. In another case, an officer in charge, a station officer, and two Police Constables of a prominent Police Station have been suspended on allegations of confiscating and reselling marijuana.

It is understood that two officers who were on a drug operation in Kadavu were contacted by a drug dealer to supply marijuana for which money was sent via M-Paisa.

The allegations are the drugs were supplied to the dealer and later, the Police received a report of the same.

A suitcase filled with drugs was confiscated by the Police which was later resold to the dealer and some officers shared the money.

Police Commissioner, Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho strongly condemned the actions of the officers.

He said while the Fiji Police Force continued its operation on antinarcotics and drugs, they were also fighting inside the institution. He said it was also a fight against the drug dealers trying to corrupt law enforcement officers.

“There are rogue officers within the Force and are being dealt with,” Brigadier-General Qiliho said.

“Many of the officers continue to do good work, but it takes only a few to tarnish the name of the institution.”

Police continue the destruction of drugs on a weekly basis through court orders attempting to eliminate such issues and offences.

The Police Commissioner added that compulsory drug testing has also been frequently conducted for those on suspicion of involvement in drug usage.
