Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama kept his promise when he returned to Kadavu after five months to hand over projects and assistance totalling $245,000 yesterday.
Vunisea Secondary School had the boys’ dormitory refurbished with new beddings and double bunks while the school was also boosted with a new library with internet services including computers.
A footpath was constructed from the main school building to the dormitories costing $100,000.
A new ablution block was built for the students of Nabukelevu District School costing $40,000 and a $10,000 school library upgrade.
Also included on the list were five outboard boats and engines, chainsaws and crockery items for women of Joma Village and respective communities.
While handing out the items Mr Bainimarama said, he would like to call on traditional leaders, resource-owners, religious leaders and youths of Kadavu to take up the initiative in playing a role in the development of their province.
“I encourage you all to work together with Government to create a better community and every individual has a role to play,” Mr Bainimarama said.
By combining our efforts he said, we will certainly be able to build a strong community, a stable vanua and a prosperous Fiji.
Joma Soqosoqo Vakamarama president Varanisese Urai said they were so fortunate that five months after seeking PM’s assistance they were blessed to receive the items they had asked for.
“We made a request for crockery items to cater for our school children and their kitchen,” Ms Urai said.
Items they received included a gas stove and two gas cylinders.
Solotavui Village headman Jale Bati was on cloud nine when his name was called to receive his community’s outboard fibreglass boat and engine.
“We made a request for an outboard engine and boat to assist the children living in the villages of Nakasaleka district in Kavala Bay,” Mr Bati said.
“Our children can reach school on time now, so we are grateful to the assistance.”
This, he said is the shortest time he has received his request even though a road is planned for construction in his district.
