Members of the Sunday School in Natokalau Village in Yawe, Kadavu, were given a picnic treat by the village at Natokalau beach.
Village headman (turaga ni koro) Timoci Raibiriki said the picnic was an annual event.
“We’re doing this to show our children that they are special to us,” he said.
On Thursday, all the village men went to their respective farms to harvest their dalo and cassava for the picnic.
On Friday, the villagers made their way to the beach where the men prepared an earth oven (lovo) while the youths and women went out fishing.
“Dalo and cassava were cooked in the lovo and an open fire was lit for the fish,” he said.
After lunch, they returned to the village and were at the village hall by 7pm to have tea and watch the entertainment provided by the Sunday school members.
“Our women also baked cake and pies for tea in the evening,” Mr Raibiriki said.
“The day belonged to members of the Sunday school.”
Now that the Sunday school break up party was over, the villagers are now preparing for their Christmas and New Year celebrations.
“We plan to celebrate Christmas on the beach again,” he said.
“We will have our usual Christmas church service in church and have a village feast at the beach.
The village headman said the villagers were also reminded to help parents monitor the children’s activities during the festive season.
